Let user decide where metadata is saved

by Community member · Sep 2, 2026

Notes Plus saves metadata (if a note has a priority, tags, is pinned, is favorited etc, if a folder is sorted, etc) in a JSON file in the macOS filesystem: "~/Library/Application Support/.... .notesplus/notes-metadata.json" (exact location might differ on Intel / Silicon and is changing anyways as the app is in development). This is standard behaviour for macOS apps. FEATURE WISH: let user decide where and how this metadata is saved, so maybe 1. on the standard macOS folder (like described above). clean, but if user moves the notes outside of the app, the metadata is lost 2. in "hidden" .dotfiles in each folder. has the advantage that user can move the folders without losing the metadata. however, moving single .md files might then also lose the data, as this doesnt automatically move the .dotfiles FYI this ticket was written by the developer of Notes Plus, as an reaction to a comment on Hackernews
